Controlled Substances / Pain Management Requirements

Prescribing Controlled Substance Course - Florida Requirement

The Florida Statutes, Section 456.0301, require that any physician registered with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, and authorized to prescribe controlled substances, complete a board approved 2-hour course on prescribing controlled substances. These means there are a limited group of organizations that can provide this course. A complete list of approved courses is available from the CE Broker course finder platform, and the complete list of approved organizations is available on the Florida Board of Medicine website.

Nicklaus Children's Hospital is not able to provide this course. We recommend our local area physicians to check CE Broker for course options, or take the course offered by Baptist Health.

Pain Management Requirements - DEA MATE Act

The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act is part of a federal law passed in December 2022 that creates a new, one-time requirement for any Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registered practitioner. This requirement is separate from the FL Board of Medicine requirement and, while activities approved by the FL Board of Medicine for the Controlled Substances Requirement meet the DEA MATE Act needs, the reverse is not true. You can review our DEA MATE Act Frequently Asked Questions article for details on the new requirement.

Nicklaus Children's Hospital may offer activities that meet the new DEA requirement as part of their CME curriculum. Activities that meet this requirement will note this in the Accreditation Statement. A complete list of activities that meet this criteria can be found in our virtual catalog.

Reporting Past Activities

At this time we are unable to report CME Credits earned prior to December 2020 into CE broker directly from iLearn for credits. It was our intention to switch to this new platform with the hopes that we can begin reporting credits automatically, however due to unforeseen issues with the platform we will be unable to retroactively report credits. As in past years, we will only report the following activities  that took place in 2019 and 2020 to CE Broker: Large conferences & Symposiums (The annual Pediatric Postgraduate Course, annual Board Review courses, etc.) and Grand Rounds re-licensure sessions. Below is a list of activities and their reporting status. For more information on CE Broker and how we report, go to the CE Broker Reporting page.
